The Delhi Police are hunting for Sanjay Kumar Singh (35), grandson of an ex-MP from Bihar, accused of running a kidney racket for almost a decade. Singh allegedly exploited vagabonds and drug-addicts working as professional blood donors in Delhi. The kidney racket was exposed last month when a
vagabond, Vikram (25), from Connaught Place in the Capital told a city court that he had been cheated in a kidney donation case. Vikram alleged he had been paid the money promised for the kidney that was removed at Sure Tech hospital in Nagpur.
Investigations into the case led to the arrest of a vagabond Raju, who had reportedly introduced Vikram to Singh. Raju also worked as an agent for him at RML hospital in Delhi. It was also revealed that Singh allegedly ran the kidney racket in collusion with Sunil Deshmukh, medical administrator of Sure Tech hospital, who was sacked in December 2009 for facilitating illegal organ transplant racket. Raju's interrogation led to Deshmukh's arrest, the official said.
“Singh recruited agents on a salary basis and rewarded them with Rs 10,000 per donor and paid Rs 2-3 lakh to the donor,” the official added.
According to the police, “Singh recruited vagabonds and drug addicts, who frequented various government hospital blood banks to hunt for poor people who needed money and were willing to donate organ.”
Singh would then send the donor along with the agent to Nagpur where Deshmukh prepared the documents in which the donor is usually shown as the recipient's family member willing to donate his/her organ.
The police claim that Singh, a native of Muzaffarpur, operates from Delhi, Nagpur and Aligarh. “He chose Nagpur, as the procedure there is not so strict in comparison to Delhi,” said the official. The police have also arrested Deshmukh's associate.
