Ex-judge, UDD secy on VC search panel

In some good news regarding selection of Nagpur University's new vice-chancellor, chancellor K Sankaranarayan has appointed former chief justice of Delhi high court AP Shah as chairman of three-member search panel for selecting the VC.

State has appointed principal secretary of urban development department (UDD) TC Benjamin as secretary while the third member is AIIMS director Ramchandra Deka, who has been appointed by the university.

During a joint meeting of the management and academic councils on July 12 the NU had selected Deka to represent it.

According to a reliable source, the search panel is slated to meet governor at Raj Bhavan some time in the third week of this month to apprise him about the procedure to be followed. On the same day, the members will also conduct their first meeting to decide the formalities, including inviting applications from eligible candidates through advertisements in various media.

The panel will then scrutinise the applications as per rules, regulations, merit and select best 10 candidates. Those selected will be called for the presentation and interaction in Mumbai and the panel will recommend five names out of them to the governor for a final call. Afterwards, the governor will conduct their interview and finally nominate the candidate as VC.

Source added that the entire process will take at least three months. This means the university will get a new VC by December first week.

Many aspirants among the academic and management council members are in the race and some of them have already participated in the selection of Mumbai VC .
