nagpur :- Senate elections in a soup

Nagpur University's perennial problem of not issuing degrees has come back to haunt the senate elections. Those who wanted to vote for senate members for a 5-year term are unable to do so as submitting degree certificates has become a must.

Shockingly, the university has failed to issue degree certificates of many courses since 2006-07. Even after more than 50,000 forms were sold for graduates' enrollment, only 4,000 were submitted till Monday. Thursday is the last date to submit the forms. In its July 23 issue, TOI had highlighted the problems faced by students, especially those planning to study abroad or trying for a job. Those who are planning to contest the polls are demanding the extension of the date.

"It was a shocking case of apathy right from the time notices were issues," senate member and lawyer Mohan Bajpayee told TOI, adding that a majority of people who are interested in the becoming members were shying away due to the pathetic conditions that prevail.

"The notification of July 13 had failed to mention where the forms would be sold and submitted. Furthermore, it has mentioned that only candidates' degrees would be accepted. How can a layman know where to go for forms," he asked.

They were made to purchase forms from the university library near Maharajbag and then had to go all the way to the campus to submit fees for enrollment. If this was not enough, forms had to be submitted at the university's administrative block in front of Maharajbagh along with the receipt of fees.

"Due to this circus, candidates are shying away in big numbers. Moreover, at the campus, clerks are remaining absent most of the time and people are suffering. Just imagine, a layman travelling all the way from the NU library to the campus and again to the administrative block wasting his precious time," Bajpayee lamented.

He added that they had demanded an extension of the August 12 deadline by a month due to non-availability of degrees and all the other hassles. "I've seen many candidates deciding to drop the idea of becoming a member only to avoid these hassles and harassment," he said.

New pro-VC Arvind Chaudhary stated that there were some problems with the degree certificates but since he was new, he will take stock of the situation. "The extension of deadline for the senate poll process is under consideration," he said while refusing to comment further.

TOI had exposed the NU examination department's apathy of failing to issue degrees of many courses. This has put thousands of students in the lurch. Their future is now at stake as their employers and college's administration, especially aboard, are asking for their original degrees. Students of courses like master of mass communication (MMC) are yet to get their degrees. This is shocking on the part of students who are suffering as their employers demand original ones, especially after the fake mark-sheet and revaluation scam that rocked the university about a decade back.

Senior officials from the department revealed that printers used for printing degree certificates were outdated and were not in proper working conditions. They need repairs time and again and therefore one printer is being used for printing degrees which is consuming most of the time.
