Babus in holiday mood as long weekend looms

Holiday mood is already in the air, specially so in government offices. With Diwali (Laxmipujan) falling on Friday many have taken Saturday off to make it a long weekend. Several offices, including NMC and Zilla Parishad are giving two days holiday for Diwali.

This has prompted their staffers to go for casual leave either before or after the three day holidays. Thus attendance in most offices will be thin right from Tuesday. Those wanting to get anything done in government offices are advised not to hold high hopes. The files are not going to move until at least middle of next week. Officially, the NMC will remain shut on November 5, 6 and 7 but the mood in its corridors is already that of merry-making. Its last general body meeting was postponed on account of code of conduct and may not be held before December 4. Key policy decisions are already on backburner.

The NMC went all out to announce a mega expo to be held for women entrepreneurs at Kasturchand Park. Though the expo has begun, the exhilaration seems to have vanished with the cold winds that have hit the city. The same mood seems to have penetrated the offices of Zilla Parishad and the Collectorate where, barring a few, most officials are on 'outdoor' duty. It is same with Nagpur University. With work slack owing to absence of full-time VC and and pro-VC, the holidays have only added to the lazy mood. Try meeting any official after 3 pm this week, you would be lucky to find one. The divisional commissioner office now wears a barren look. DCP (traffic) Sahebrao Patil is reportedly unwell. No wonder the traffic department personnel were winding up for the day early when TOI visited the office on Monday. On the other hand, police personnel seem upset with their leave applications getting rejected on account of increased vigilance during Diwali. Some officials have proceeded on leave, much to the chagrin of others.
