Some power unions withdraw stir

Unions of three state-run power companies have developed differences over the three-day strike to oppose back door privatization. While Subordinate Engineers Association (SEA) is going ahead with the strike, other unions have decided to withdraw following assurances by the top officials. The strike began from zero hour on Tuesday.

Sham Deshmukh, Nagpur president of joint action committee of all unions (constituted to oppose Nagpur franchisee), told the media that MSEDCL managing director Ajoy Mehta assured the union representatives on Monday that no decision on franchisee would be taken before the union leaders had a meeting with chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar over three contentious issues.

The union leaders will meet top officials of the three power companies on February 7. They will also meet deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on February 14.

Unions are opposing appointment of franchisees by MSEDCL, closure of old units in Koradi and other power plants and execution of transmission projects on turnkey basis. "Mahagenco MD Subrat Ratho has assured that one or two old units that were shut down recently would be restarted. A decision on turnkey projects would be taken after listening to the views of the unions," Deshmukh said.

However, SEA which was a part of joint committee, has decided to go ahead with the strike. Its members comprise sub-engineers, junior, assistant and deputy executive engineers. Executive engineers of Mahagenco are also members of this 13,000 strong association.

Dilip Bhalerao of SEA said, "We are not satisfied with the assurances of the management. Our concerns regarding MSEDCL franchisee, handing over of hydroelectric projects to private players and turnkey contracts have not been resolved. So we are going ahead with the strike." Meanwhile, a senior MSEDCL official said that the unions would be given a detailed presentation on franchisee. "We will explain to the unions how the franchisee decision was not against their interest," he said.
