Fifth arrest in Monica murder case

The crime branch has nabbed a fifth person in the Monica Kirnapure murder case. Rameshrao Sonekar was arrested from his residence at Bhande Plot on Friday evening. Four persons had earlier been arrested.

According to the cops, Sonekar is the uncle of assailant Shrikant Sonekar who was the first person to be arrested. Police said, after brutally killing Monica, Shrikant met another accused, Umesh Marathe, who was arrested from Yavatmal few days ago, and went to Sonekar's shop in Gittikhadan.

Shrikant and Umesh changed their bloodstained clothes at Sonekar's shop and also gave their mobile phone to him. The two also borrowed Rs 500 from Sonekar to travel to Katol where they had to meet the mastermind, Kunal Jaiswal.

Despite being suspicious, Sonekar washed the bloodstained clothes and destroyed the mobile phone. He has been booked for destroying evidence.

Cops are yet to find Raju, another accused.

Monica, a third-year student of electronics engineering, was stabbed more than 10 times by the assailants. Police have claimed it was a case of mistaken identity as the assailants were hired to kill another inmate of hostel where Monica was staying. The murder had taken place at Shree Nagar on March 11.
