MCA stops permission to hold lower rating meets

MCA stops permission to hold lower rating meets
In a move to promote fair competition to the players and prohibit the malpractice by little known associations, the Maharashtra Chess Association (MCA) has stopped giving permission to conduct lower rating chess tournaments in the state.

The state body, however, took this decision after allowing one such tourney to the Nagpur District Chess Association (NDCA). No sooner than the MCA realised that many districts and taluka associations are seeking permissions for below rated championships just for the sake of lowly rated players gaining their ratings by competing in such championships sans real competition.

The NDCA got success in getting the approval of MCA and the All India Chess Federation (AICF) to conduct the MS Venkatraman Memorial Fide Rating Chess tournament for players below 2000 Elo ratings in the city between April 26 and 29.

However, Taluka Chess Association, Saoner, were denied permission by the MCA to conduct similar championship in Saoner between April 30 and May 3.

When contacted, the MCA chairman Ravindra Dongre informed TOI on Sunday that the Saoner body has not taken due permission of the state body regarding the said tourney, rather the MCA came to know that the Taluka body forwarded their request directly to the AICF by forwarding the requisite amount to the Indian federation.

Dongre said, "We got a copy of the letter of the NDCA that the Saoner body has forwarded the tournament fees amount to the AICF rather than any request letter to conduct such championship."

"The AICF approves the championship only if the same has been recommended by the state body. However, after giving a go ahead to the NDCA and after realising some malpractice, we at the MCA have decided not to allow any below rated championship till our next executive meeting, in which the final decision will be taken," confirmed Dongre.

Meanwhile Pradip Deohare, secretary of Taluka Chess Association, Saoner, alleged the MCA of deliberately denying permission to his meet saying, "Despite promoting chess, they (MCA) are pulling their smaller units down."

He further alleged, "We have followed all the necessary formalities in March and in spite of getting the approval of AICF for our championship and making several requests to the MCA, the state body has deliberately denied us the permission."

Taking stern action against the Taluka body, the NDCA, the parent body, has given a show cause notice to the Saoner body, stating "their actions constitute a serious breach of code of discipline and have brought bad name to the NDCA."

The NDCA further asked Deohare to explain why disciplinary action including disaffiliation of Saoner unit, should not be taken.

It has been reliably learnt that Deohare has threatened the joint secretary of MCA Manoj Itkelwar of conducting the below 2000 Elo rating chess championship in Saoner by taking the approval of a parallel chess federation.
