Sewagram Exp driver gives Thane the skip

In a freak incident, the Nagpur-Mumbai Sewagram Express engine driver forgot to halt at Thane station, and had to make an unscheduled stop at Bhandup to let commuters to alight on Tuesday.

The identity of the 46-year-old driver was not disclosed and a breath analyzer test conducted on him by officials at Bhandup station did not conclude that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The train, which departs from Nagpur junction has a scheduled stop at Thane station at 11.08 am and departs after a two-minute halt for Dadar, to proceed to its destination, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), and reach there at noon.

A senior railway official said, "The driver probably forgot to halt at Thane. The CST control room alerted officials at Bhandup, who ensured the train halted by activating the red signal. Hundreds who had to alight at Thane were inconvenienced due to the driver's lapse."

V M Malegaonkar, chief public relations officer (CPRO), Central Railway, said, "Fortunately, the incident was not serious as the signal at Thane was green. It was a freak incident, but an inquiry will be conducted to find out the cause. Normal services were not affected due to the incident."

Officials said the lapse could have been termed "extremely serious" had the driver proceeded despite a red signal. Another senior official said, "The train has a two-minute halt at Thane, but since the passengers were distressed, we allowed it to halt for 12 minutes at Bhandup."

An inquiry is being conducted and the statements of the driver and assistant driver have been recorded. On November 16, 2010, a Virar fast train overshot a station. On August 9, 2009, 11 persons were injured when an Andheri-bound train rammed into a stationary local at Mahim station.
