ITI ADMISSION 2011 - Admissions to ITI start; new trade options now available
The admission process of the Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Rahate Colony started on Wednesday and will continue till July 20. The students who have passed the 8th, 10th and 12th standard examination are eligible to take admission and will be allotted specific trades as per their group.

Trade options available for the 8th passed candidates include painter, wiremen, plumber, carpenter, sheet-metal worker, welder and building constructor. For those who passed the 10th examination, the courses available are turner (mechanics), machinist grinder, electrician, motor mechanic, air-conditioning, refrigerator, fitter, driver-cum-mechanic and plastic processing operator, among others. The 12th passed candidates can opt for trades like COPA (Computer Operator and Assistant), stenography in Marathi and English.

ITI principal Ashok Rangari said that the number of the 8th passed applicants is 721, 10th passed 6,394 whereas those clearing the 12th is 1,458. The reservation share is around 50% of the total admissions out of which 70% are for Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Parsees. The rest 30% is reserved for OBC, SCs and STs. "Admissions are done on the basis of merit and no compromise will be made to this rule," said Rangari.

Some new trade options have been introduced for minorities which include civil constructor and draftsmen, draftsmen mechanic and surveyor. Their classes will be conducted in a special wing and the faculty will also be different. A six-month special computer course is being provided for blind students. Their faculties are also visually impaired. "Our institute is the only one in the state to offer such exceptional courses for visually impaired. We are also planning to start courses for handicapped students," said Rangari. There are many production-oriented assignments in which students are employed to work for a project and can receive 25% of the payment, he added.

The general fee for students is Rs 15 per month and students filling the forms for 'economically backward classes' are exempted from paying fees. The fixed pay for general students is Rs 40 and that for minority is Rs 60. Apart from this, scholarship programmes worth Rs 1,000 per month are also available.
