Nagpur University awarded 2,000 PhDs in 10 years

Even as the Nagpur University started its entrance exam for getting doctorate of philosophy (PhD), making it tougher to get the coveted degree, it had distributed nearly 2,000 such degrees in last one decade. This means nearly 200 students received PhDs every year, which is a staggering number compared to that of other universities. Academicians, on condition of anonymity, questioned the basis of awarding such a prestigious degree at bay, thus compromising on the quality of education. NU awards PhDs in 10 faculties - science, engineering, medical, commerce, social sciences, home science, arts, education, law and ayurved.

According to statistics provided by the university, more than 7,000 students registered for PhD last decade, of which 2,360 had actually submitted their project work, while 1,990 were awarded degrees. The number of students getting PhD grew every year from 2001 to 2010. However, 2005 and 2010 were the exceptions when transition of the university administration took place along with reconstitution of all the statutory bodies including management and academic councils, senate and research recognition committees (RRCs) which clears the synopsis and theses work leading to PhD degree.Even as the Nagpur University started its entrance exam for getting doctorate of philosophy (PhD), making it tougher to get the coveted degree, it had distributed nearly 2,000 such degrees in last one decade.
