Monsoon knocking at Vidarbha's doors

Even as the pre-monsoon rains lashed many cities in Vidarbha on Sunday, monsoon is expected to reach the region anytime between Thursday and next Monday. If the current weather system continues to prevail and develops at the same pace, monsoon could come in 3-4 days or it may also reach the region by June 20-21. However, the chances of further delay in monsoon cannot be ruled out too.

Monsoon used to reach Nagpur by June 10 but the regional meteorological office (RMO) in city said that the pattern keeps changing every few years. Last year too the monsoon had arrived on June 24. A senior Met official told TOI that the IMD is planning to revise the dates of onset of monsoon. It has sought data and information for past 100 years from many Met offices in this regard.

Deputy director general at RMO PN Nandankar said, "The monsoon will arrive in Vidarbha in another 3 to 7 days. Monsoon like conditions are prevailing over Chhattisgarh and Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha. But, unless there is any rainfall in south Vidarbha and the areas adjoining Marathwada that too for few consecutive days, monsoon cannot be declared."
