NAGPUR :- 3,251 families with illegal BPL ration cards detected

In a special drive launched to curb misuse of below poverty lines (BPL) ration cards in Nagpur district, the Nagpur Zilla Parishad ((ZP) has identified 3,251 families not eligible for the subsidised foodgrain scheme.

ZP chief executive officer (CEO) Anand Bharkade said there are 1,32,760 BPL card holders in Nagpur district, which comprise of 13 tehsils.

However, the Central government has given grain allotment only for 1.32 lakh BPL card holders for the district, Bharkade told TOI.

After instructions from the state and central governments, the ZP CEO issued special instructions to all block development officers (BDOs) to conduct a survey of BPL card holders. So far, the survey, which is still underway, has revealed 10,274 BPL card holders as not eligible for subsidy for various reasons.

"Of these, 7,023 card holders had either died or had shifted from their hometowns. While 3,251 BPL card holders were found non-eligible as they (card holders) had submitted false information," said the CEO. He, however, expressed concern over the BDOs failing to lodge FIRs against bogus card holders.

State minister for food and civil supplies Anil Deshmukh had issued directives to all concerned officials to carry out surveys to trace out bogus BPL ration card holders.

He had also directed criminal proceedings against well-off families having BPL ration cards, as they were availing schemes meant for the poor. However, the BDOs have failed to follow instructions, Bharkade rued.

He said that now he has asked the BDOs to initiate criminal action against the bogus BPL card holders. The CEO, however, said that one chance would be given to the bogus card holders to voluntarily take their names back or else police action would be initiated against them.
