YTA, NUTA Shikshan Manch alliance sweeps NU Board of Studies polls

Nagpur University's usually peaceful premises was abuzz with at least a thousand of men and women on Wednesday. Thankfully, it was not a protest by the students' organizations but counting of NU's Board of Studies (BoS) elections. Myriad emotions were witnessed on the premises as winners were greeted with Gulal and garlands while losers tried to slip away without being noticed. The supporters from all factions thronged the NU's administrative block on Amravati road since morning and stayed until midnight as counting continued in the historic convocation hall.

As expected, the alliance of Young Teachers Association (YTA), Shikshan Manch and Nagpur University Teachers Association (NUTA) looked headed towards a clean sweep in the much-delayed polls. The combine led by YTAs Baban Taywade and Manch's Prabhuji Deshpande won seats on a majority of boards, thus giving severe jolt to newly-formed Secular Front led by senior academician Dr Ved Prakash Mishra. Interestingly, the Secular Panel had convincingly won the Senate polls against the alliance in January. This time, there is a turnaround in the alliance fortunes with its candidates romping home on as many as 18 boards when report last came in.

Of the 73 boards of studies, polling took place for only 22. On most of them, alliance candidates won their respective seats with convincing margins. This included wins by some prominent candidates including former senate members Arun Dhage, Vijayalaxmi Ramteke and Vandana Khushlani. Many biggies of Secular Panel including former commerce dean and management council member Dilip Wairagade, who secured just three votes, suffered a jolt. Also, principal of NU's Barrister SK Wankhede BEd College Vandana Manapure lost by managing to get only one vote.

An elated Taywade of YTA credited the success to the alliance and hardwork put in by the members of all three bodies. "Since over a decade, we had been working for welfare of the education sector and voters have rewarded us," he said. According to him, the alliance won 20 out of 22 boards while Secular Panel managed to win only one board of social work where five of its candidates emerged triumphant. "YTA candidates have won from 19 boards, Shikshan Manch from two and NUTA from one," he claimed.

Candidates were elected unopposed from 34 boards including engineering, home science and law faculties. The counting process started amid unprecedented security and entire premises witnessed hectic activities throughout the day as contestants and their followers thronged the area. NU top officials including registrar Mahesh Yenkie, returning officer for the polls, BCUD director Arvind Chaudhary, PRO Sanjay Bahekar and others were busy in ensuring smooth counting.

Academicians attributed loss of Secular Panel to its alleged "unethical practices" like blackmailing and pressuring the NU administration that led to resignation by assistant returning officer Vilas Ramteke.

BoS poll scenario

Total boards - 73

Vacant boards - 17

Elected unopposed- 34
