VC warns colleges to appoint staff

Nagpur university vice chancellor S N Pathan has warned all affiliated colleges to appoint at least three faculty members for each course

in the next academic year (2009-1010) or their admissions would be cancelled from 2010-2011 sessions.

The VC postponed the examination of Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) after it was disclosed that the around 10 colleges offering mass communication courses did not have lecturers as per University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. However, in order not to jeopardise careers of 200 BJ students, the exam would now be conducted on May 13, said a university source. He added that Pathan had set the exam date only after considering the fact that these colleges had appointed contributory lecturers.

Moreover, sources said, mass communication courses run by NU were not as per UGC norms. People doing these courses were not being appointed as teachers. Hence Pathan decided to change the names of courses to BJ and MA in journalism. These courses have to be run as per UGC norms.

The VC's directions were issued with a view to develop professional skills and competence among the students. The directions for both the courses mentioned that there shall be at least three full-time teachers appointed as per existing qualifications and recruitment conditions, laid down by the UGC. Pathan confirmed the development.
