Mumbai News :- Medico strike continues; government serves termination notice

Cracking its whip on the striking resident doctors, the Maharashtra Government today issued them an ultimatum to return to work by tonight or face termination.

With the indefinite strike by over 2,500 medicos entering its fifth day, the government warned that action would be taken if they did not report to work immediately, Dr Pravin Shingare of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research told PTI.

The doctors, who are on strike to demand among other things higher stipend, were earlier in the day slapped with expulsion notices after they refused to return to work.

As talks between the agitating doctors and the state health officials failed, the government issued them termination notices.

In an effort to break the deadlock, Health Minister Rajendra Shingane said,"We will definitely look into the demands of the doctors sympathetically, provided they join back immediately."

Since the strike has paralysed public health care in the state, the government threatened to take action against the doctors under Essential Services Maintenance Act.

The resident doctors across Maharashtra, barring those from Nagpur Medical college, have said the strike would continue till all their demands including better living conditions were met.
