Dr Bobhate finally has something to cheer

NAGPUR: The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) may have posted Dr S K Bobhate, former Professor, Government Medical College and
Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur as dean of Government Medical College, Yavatmal, just to fulfill the requirement of a regular dean before Medical Council of India (MCI) inspection. But Dr Bobhate, who is due to retire in June 2010, has taken it as a gift and an opportunity to serve the people of his home district.

"Nothing is impossible provided one has the will. I belong to a very small village in Yavatmal district. It is my good fortune that I will be able to serve my own people before I retire," Dr Bobhate told TOI. In less than a week after joining, he has already kicked off some major changes at the college. Known for his administrative skills and sincerity, had almost gone into hibernation after he being unceremoniously shunted out as acting dean at GMCH, Nagpur.

Now back in saddle, he is all geared up to take up newer challenges. "Every system has some flaws. A place like a medical college is no exception. But if a dean has courage and will to serve, s/he can get over most hurdles. Rules are always there and they need to be followed but one should take risks in times of crisis and go out of the way to handle a situation.," he said.

Dr Bobhate has already taken on the task of converting the casualty at GMC Yavatmal into a full-fledged trauma centre in eight days before the MCI comes calling on November 17. "I have already arranged for a round the clock 60 MA X-ray machine, a ventilator and required staff. The air-conditioners and a few other smaller equipment will be in place soon," he said. He has begun a drive for improvement of doctor-patient relationship and a cleanliness drive. Moving from a 1400-bed hospital to a 590-bed one, he is sure he will be able to handle the hospital. He claims to have already made good acquaintance with the staff there.
