the city take off. Some of the prominent spots include Bajaj Nagar Square, opposite RTO, opposite Gorakshan Trust in Dhantoli, Central Avenue and Nag Road.

NIT chairman Sanjay Mukherjee said that the civic agency in the last board meeting had identified 67 plots of land owned by NIT where parking spaces could be created. At present NIT has given several parking slots on lease to private agencies on Central Avenue. The civic agency will terminate these lease and run the slots on its own.

The agency is also planning to create two multi-level parking in the first phase. The first multi-level parking would be near Cinemax multiplex. "The BOT operator will construct two buildings. The first will be a commercial complex while the second will be the parking," Mukherjee said.

The tender for this project has already been floated and several bids have been received. It will be finalised in the next board meeting of NIT.

Commenting on parking charges in this parking plaza, Mukherjee said that as per the tender the operator will run the parking for one year without charging anything from NIT. "In this one year we will get an idea as to how much will be the operation and maintenance cost. Then we will fix the parking charges accordingly," he said.

He said that the plaza will accommodate 60 to 100 cars. "It is not a very big project but a pioneering one. We will construct another multi-level parking near Hotel Skylark on Central Avenue. If the response is good more such projects would be created," he said.

The NIT is also planning to create an inter-state bus terminus at Jagnade Square. CRISIL has been appointed as a consultant for the project. A bus parking will also be created at Juni Shukrawari.

Commenting on NMC's demand that NIT should hand over open space to it for parking, Mukherjee said that NIT has decided in principle not to use open space for parking as those were meant for sports activities and entertainment.

There are a large number of persons living in unauthorised layouts whose houses are not getting regularised as the land is reserved for parking in the DP. Mukherjee said that if such persons hand over the land to NIT it will develop them as parking slots and in return the plot owners will get transfer of development rights (TDR).

The NIT chief also said that if any person wants to develop parking slots outside municipal limits he could approach NIT, which would help him in getting requisite clearance from central and state governments.
