Jan Morcha gives ultimatum to state

after the Allahabad high court struck down Uttar Pradesh government notification to acquire 2,500 hectares of farmers land at Dadri

in Ghaziabad district, petitioner Jan Morcha has threatened to carry out a fresh legal battle against the Maharashtra Government which is yet to rehabilitate farmers affected by Mihan project in Nagpur district. It has given the state government time till end of the winter session of the legislature to resolve the pending issues failing which the matter would be taken to court of law.

"It is a pity that the chief minister is the chairman of Maharashtra Airport Development Company which is the nodal agency for Mihan but till date no rehabilitation of the affected farmers has been done," morcha's general secretary Pratap Goswami said in a press conference here on Saturday.

"Cultivable land of farmers has been acquired at a pittance, from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh an acre, and it is being sold by MADC at Rs 60 lakh to Rs 80 lakh per acre. The entire acquisition is illegal and the government should directly negotiate with the farmers to arrive at the compensation amount which is acceptable to them," said Goswami.

Taking strong objection to development model which deprives poor farmers their source of livelihood without any rehabilitation, the Jan Morcha feels that the ex-gratia being offered to the Mihan affected is nothing but an insult as the basic compensation for land is yet to be paid. It has raised doubts over the proposal of giving 12.5 % developed land to the oustees as there is no land available with the government for the purpose. Similarly the TDR offer is also flawed as the Nagpur rural area does not fall under zone A, B or C classified for TDRs by the government, the Jan Morcha leader alleged.

The morcha warned the government that if issues of rehabilitation and compensation package acceptable to farmers is not arrived during the winter session, it will be constrained to approach the court to seek justice.
