cell will help get information about the status of the application. Presently, the applicants have to be at the mercy of details of either the passport office desk staffers or the police department.
The cyber cell, under deputy commissioner of police Kishor Jadhav, (crime), is learnt to have started the initial work on data assimilation for the proposed section. Crime branch officials said, the initiative was taken to ensure that applicants remained updated on the movement of their applications in different offices.
Citizens often search for their applications from one desk to another in various offices situated at CGO complex. "There were reports that some unscrupulous lower division clerks, peons and constables were misleading passport seekers and exploiting them by keeping their applications pending for personal gains.
As a result, the people face immense problems trying to know the status of pending applications. The police department's initiative will bring about transparency in the process and alleviate the commoner's problems," said a senior officer. The process, however, may take time before it materialises, he said.
After the upgradation, the website will have a separate section for passport applicants from where they will be required to provide information to know the status in the safe confines of their residences, office or laptops.
The software is being prepared in such a way that the applicant would be informed about the verification of the application either with the passport office, local police station or special branch where personal data of an individual is checked and criminal records are scanned to ascertain whether one has any offence registered against him or her. The website facility is likely to be helpful to citizens in tracking the movement of the document in the passport office and police department for verification.
The website, nagpurpolice.org, which was recently upgraded, included several new features in it, including data of stolen or missing mobile phones and vehicles. The new-look website also included detailed satellite-generated map of how to reach the nearest police stations. The police website also has a "ladies special' section offering information and guidance to sort out problems like eve-teasing and sexual harassment at workplace which the fairer sex faces in routine life.
