Kenneth Fernando, a prison superintendent in the capital Colombo said 96 Tamil prisoners held in the New Magazine prison in Colombo have been on a hunger strike for nearly a week.
They have been rejecting food served by prison authorities but have consumed food coming from their families.
However, the detainees in the prison in the northern town of Jaffna have been rejecting all food. At least two of the 12 detainees on hunger strike have been admitted to the Jaffna hospital, officials said.
All detainees held for suspected links with the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels demand expeditious legal action or being released from the prison.
