In order to boost educational facilities in the twin districts of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur in Vidarbha region, the Maharashtra Government on Wednesday announced setting up of Gondwana University for students of the region.
The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister Ashok Chavan.
Till now, the students of these two districts were being served by a sub-centre of Nagpur University, which is located in Gadchiroli, a Naxalite-affected district. “The formation of the new university should be completed in a period of six months,” Chavan told reporters here.
He said that by June 2011, the first academic year of this university would commence. “The details of the capacity of the university, staff and appointment of the vice-chancellor would commence shortly. We want everything to be in place by January next year,” he said.
