Faculty of Arts :- Department of Marathi

The Department of Marathi was established in 1958. The Department is situated in the main Humanities building on an 610.59 Sq.m. built up area located in Mahatma Jyotiba Phuley Campus, Amaravati Road, Nagpur.

Dr. Akshyakumar Kale in the present head of the Department. The Department has other fulltime faculty
 member which includes Dr. Asha Saodekar as reader and Dr. Shailendra Lende as lecturer. The Department has cherished history of distinguished scholars heading the Department which included B.S. Pandit, Dr. A.N. Deshpande, Dr. V.B. Prabhudesai, Dr. D.B. Kulkarni, M.S. Wabgaonkar, Dr. Y.R. Manohar, Dr.M .P. Kulkarni. The Marathi Department, thus, has a cherished history of distinguished faculties who were scholars in their own right. Due to its strong academic tradition and research culture, the Department has a respectable place and name throughout Maharashtra.

The Department through its research critiques and literary essays have generated methodological parameter and approaches and added to the existing knowledge in the subject of old and medieval literature, Modern Poetry, Contemporary Marathi Literture, New literary trends etc. Rare combination of academic and administrative excellence is a major strength of the Department. The faculty members are well-known in all over Maharashtra in the various areas of Marathi literature, social & cultural field.

The Marathi Department has been conducting fulltime M.A. course since its inception. Ph. D. research is also conducted in the Department on part time basis. During the academic period starting from 1981-82 to 2000-2001, the Department also conducted fulltime M. Phil. Programme. The Department at present is offering fulltime M.A. and part time Ph.D. Programme.

Intake Capacity - The intake capacity of the Department for M.A. Part-I and M.A. Part-II is 70 seats each respectively.

Admission Procedure And Eligibility

Candidate seeking admission in M.A. Part-I must have B.A. degree with at least Marathi as one of the subject. Candidates having Marathi literatureas option for B.A. regular or additional B.A. in Marathi literature will be considered on priority.

Candidates seeking registration for Ph.D. in the Department must have passed M.A. in Marathi with at least second division.


Courses Offered

The M.A. Programme is for two years. For both the years four papers are offered respectively out of which two papers are compulsory. The candidater have to choose at least two paper from the list of optional papers offered in both M.A.-I & M.A.-II . Each paper carries 100 marks.

Research Activities

The Department has been conducting research work through its academic programmes. Almost 20 research scholars are enrolled with the respective faculties for their Ph.D. dissertation. Till date more than 100 student have been offered Ph.D. degrees in various areas of research. Also considerable numbers of student haved passed their M.Phil. degree course. Apart from that the approachers and methods of teaching also involves research orientation so that the students are aware of the skills and techniques required to conduct research in literary studies.

Minor And Major Research Projects

Dr. Madan Kulkarni (Retired) has completed a major research project of UGC on the topic ‘Comparative study of Regional Novels in Hindi and Marathi’. Dr. Asha Saodekar has completed a minor research project of Nagpur University on the topic ‘Kavi B.B. Borkar Yanchya kavitechi Pruthagatmata’. Dr. Akshyakumar Kale has completed his research project on topic ‘Mardekarachi Kavita : Aklan, Aswad and Chikitsa’. Dr. Kale with utmost humility and generosity has completed this project without taking any finicially grants from the UGC & Nagpur University.

Support Remedial Programmes

The Departments of Marathi has a unique library of its own which is open for the students, the faculty members as well as active research persons. We conduct library orientation programmes for students to unable them to access the library for their reading and research activities. The Department also conducts Refresher courses in Marathi under the UGC faculty improvement programme. Since 1995-96 the Department has conducted considerable numbers of Refresher courses where in Dr. M.P. Kulkarni, Dr. A.M. Kale, Dr. A.A. Saodekar have successfully coordinated those programmes.

Dr. Akshyakumar Kale
Reader and Head of Department

Born at Warud, Dist- Amaravati in Maharashtra State on 27th July 1953.
Dr. Akshyakuma Kale is an eminent critic of Modern Marathi Poetry. He stood first in M.A. Examination in 1974. He was awarded Junior Research Fellowship of UGC in 1975. He secured the Ph.D degree in 1980 for his dissertetion on topic ‘Trends in Post Independence Marathi Poetry 1947 to 1970’. He secured D. Litt. degree for his dissertetion on topic ‘Arvacheen Marathi Karyadarshan’ in 1999. Dr. kale has been actively involved in research activities and has been constantly publishing research articler in standard journals such as ‘ Pratishthan’, ‘Maharashtra Sahitya Patrika’ ‘Yugawani’ etc. Near about 100 research articles have been published till now. He also has five books to his credit namely ‘Sooktsandarbha’ (1985). ‘Govindagraj Sameeksha’ (1985), ‘Kavita Kusumagrajanchi’ (1987), ‘Arvacheen Marathi Karyadarshan’ (1999). ‘Mardekaranchi Kavita : Aklan, Aswad Ani Chikista’ (2006).

In the field of criticism of Modern Marathi Poetry his contribution have been very valuable and lasting, which has attracted the attention of scholars of Marathi language and literature throughout Maharashtra. In all his work Dr. Kale reveals his scholarly bent of mind.

Dr. Kale was awarded Kusumanil Puraskar of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangha, Nagpur, R.S. Jog Puraskar of Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, Pune and D.D. Pande Sameeksha Mitra Granth Shreshthata Puraskar of Snehawardhan Prakshan, Pune.

Dr. Kale was the President of the 4th Jansahitya Sammelan, Sakoli organized by Vidarbha Sahitya Sangha ; President of RTM Nagpur University Marathi Pradhyapak Parishad, Bhandara, 14th session and President of Sant Gadgebaba Amaravati University Marathi Pradhyapak Parishad, Yavatmal, 17th Session.
 

Dr. Asha Saodekar
Reader

Dr. Asha Saodekar is working in the Post Graduate Teaching Department of Marathi in RTM Nagpur University since April 1985. Presently she is designated as Reader in the Department. She is known as an excellent orator, skillful teacher and a leading critic.

She is a recipient of Jayantibai Kolte Silver Medal for Marathi Literature in B.A. exam of Nagpur University in 1986, N.K.Behere Gold Medal of Nagpur University and P.K. Atre Award of Vidarbha Sahiya Sangh for securing First class position in M.A.(Marathi Literature) from Nagpur University in 1970; Bhasha Vidnyan Parishad Award for securing First class First position in M.A. (Linguistics) from Nagpur University in 1991 and UGC Scholarship for doctoral research in 1972. All these achievements speak volumes about her brilliant academic career.

She has been conferred with various literary awards like Vasant Krishna Varhadpande Smriti Vishesh Puraskar of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh, Nagpur in 2001, Lekhan Purskar of Pu. Bha. Bhave Smriti Samiti, Mumbai ; in 2000 and Go.Ra. Dodke Lalit Lekhan Puraskar.

She has worked as a member, and later as president of Marathi Bhasha Samiti of K.K. Birla Foundation for Saraswati Samman Puraskar and Vyasa Puraskar for four years. She was also appointed as Representative of Marathi Language on the Regional Committee of five Indian languages viz. Marathi, Konkani, Sindhi, Gujrati and Sanskrit.

Many of her Research Papers have received critical acclaim. She has delivered many eloquent speeches in various lectue series and conferences. She has participated in the confabulances organized under the auspices of ‘Akhil Bharateeya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan’ at Thane, Pune, Amaravati, Panaji, Mumbai and Solapur and successfulluy utilized this platform to carve a niche for herself through her in depth knowledge and extraordinary oratory skills.

Till date she has nine independent publications and five edited books to her credit. She is considered to be an expert in the field of Marathi Drama, Linguistics, History of Modern Marathi Literature and Study of a Special Author. She has contributed immensely to the field of Marathi Literature as a researcher, editor, critic and writer.

She had received the grant from Nagpur University for a Research Project on “Kavi Ba. Bha. Borkar Yanchya Kavitechi Pruthagatmata” in 2001. This project in on the way of publication.
She has worked for three years as Chief Editor of “Yugavani” (1986-89), the Periodical publilshed by Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh. Presently she is the Cief Editor of the University Research Journal of the Department of Humanity, Nagpur Universtiy, Nagpur.

She has to her credit many articles published in the Sunday supplements of various local Newspapers of Nagpur like Tarun Bharat, Lokmat, Loksatta, Nagpur patrika, etc. Many of her creative works are published consistently in different marathi periodicals of repute like Yugawani Lalit, Padmagandha, Pratishthan, Maharashtra Sahitya Patrika, Milun Saryajani etc., and also in many Diwali Magazines.

Dr. Shailendra Lende
Lecturer

Dr. Shailendra Lende is working as a lecturer in the Department of Marathi since December, 2004. Dr. Lende has been a meritorious student throughout his academic career and have bagged gold medals for scoring highest marks in Marathi Literature in B.A. degree course as well as for being the first merit student of the Department of Ambedkar Thought. He was also a distinguished student of the M. Phil. degree course. Apart from these academic achievements he also qualified the JRF examination conducted by the UGC and was awarded Junior Research fellowship in 1994. He was awarded the Ph. D. degree in 2002 for the subject titled ‘Gopal Ganesh Agarker : Vyaktitva Ani Vangmaya’.

Dr. Shailendra Lende has two publications in the form of books to his credit respectively ‘Marathi Sahityatil Vivekwad’ (1994), ‘Vaichareek Nibandhakar : Yeshwant Manohar.’ He was also a co-editor of the book titled ‘Yeshwant Manohar : Pradnya Ani Pratibha.’ He has published near about 10 research articles in various reputed journals of Marathi literature. His special interests remains in Morden Marathi Literature, Thoughtful essays, Dalit Literature and fundmental issues of Modern Marathi Literature.
