In a few days time huge advertisements will grace billboards and newspapers will be agog with full page advertisements of various institutes carrying photographs of various IIT-JEE toppers and crackers, however none of these will have the photos of Ankit Agarwal even though he has cracked the IIT-JEE.
In fact, Ankit has not only cracked IIT-JEE but with the all India rank of 172, he has topped the exam in Vidarbha. However he did all this while studying in a small tuition centre in Akola. Akola lads compared to their compatriots in various metros and tier-2 cities get minimal facilities. In all nine students from the town have made it to IIT. Ankit has also scored well in his board exams with a whopping 92%.
Speaking about his achievement Ankit says, “I follow a simple mantra of ‘think globally, act locally’. So whatever your conditions might be or your opportunities may be less, but at the end of the day it’s your ambition and the hardwork you put in for it that makes all the difference.”
Ankit started preparing for IIT after class 10th board exams itself, and used to study for about seven hours daily. While taking a break from studies Ankit would indulge in his favourite pastime of reading books.
With a rank of 172, Ankit is now spoiled for choices from among the various Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) as well as for various branches, but it’s IIT Powai which tops his priority list.
The story of Ankit is definitely a lesson for people who spend lakhs to enter into classes giving IIT-JEE coaching never realising that it’s not the classes but the hardwork we put in that makes all the difference. Also even the small towns of India can be the places where toppers emerge from.
