Nagpur varsity bars admission to colleges sans full-time principals

Nagpur University Tuesday barred admissions for the new academic year 2010-2011 to 353 colleges which have not appointed full-time principals, an official said.

'We are following the orders of the Bombay High Court which had given these directives, and which had to be implemented by May 31,' the official, requesting anonymity told IANS.

With the Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSC) results due next week, the varsity step could create uncertainty for lakhs of students hoping to get admission to colleges of their choice.

Making its intentions clear, the university uploaded the list of the errant colleges - many of them run by leading state politicians - after midnight, catching the college- managements unaware.

Last week, the Vice Chancellor S.N. Pathan had indicated that the university would declare the names of such colleges which had failed to appoint a full-time principal by June 7.

The official added that the list is 'not complete' and names of more colleges could be added in the coming days. However, he declined to comment when asked whether these colleges would be given some more time to comply with the directives.

Official sources in Mumbai said that even other state universities are likely to follow suit and initiate similar measures against colleges which do not appoint a full-time principal.
