NAGPUR: The district collectorate, with the help of social forestry department, will launch a massive tree plantation drive from July 24, by planting 5 lakh saplings in the entire district.
"We have issued directions to all schools to make necessary arrangements till July 24. The drive will be undertaken with the help of 250 schools registered under National Green Corps (NGC)," said Pravin Darade, district collector.
Pradeep Kottewar, assistant director of social forestry, Nagpur, said that saplings will be made available for 50 paise each for only schools and colleges. The supply will be limited to 100 saplings to each educational institution.
The saplings will be planted under Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS), Maharashtra Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MREGS) and some other government schemes. Kottewar said wasteland, government premises, offices, schools, gram panchayat land, MIDCs, highways and roadsides will be considered.
Apart from the 250 NGC schools, others in the city too have been appealed to take up plantation drive in their premises. For getting saplings, they can contact the social forestry department office at Dharampeth on 0712-2532403.
