Generators at pumping stations for non-stop supply

Fed up with frequent power breakdowns Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC's) water supply committee has decided to install generators in Kanhan and Gorewada pumping stations to ensure smooth water supply in the city.

Committee chairman Prakash Totwani told the media that the generators would cost between Rs 16 to 17 crore. Apart from this, there would be operational, labour and diesel expenditure. "There are eight pumps at Kanhan and with the load of 2.85 MW. The load of 19 pumps at Gorewada is 5.5 MW. We are replacing the 120 MLD plant at Kanhan by a 240 MLD plant so it is imperative that the pumping station gets uninterrupted power supply," Totwani informed.

Totwani lamented that even though the pumping stations got supply through express feeders they did not get power for between one to two hours every day. "Even a five minute interruption disturbs our distribution system for two to three hours."

The chairman said that NMC would check the quality of water of the 220 nullahs and 9 lakes within municipal limits. "It has come to our notice that many industries are discharging their waste water in the water bodies and polluting them. As a result 80% of borewell water has become polluted. The polluted water finally goes into Nag river and pollutes Gosikhurd dam. The guilty industries will be dealt with stringently."

Municipal commissioner's target of Rs 200 crore for water tax was unrealistic, Totwani said adding that his estimate was Rs 150 crore but with the downward revision of water tariff NMC would not be able to collect more than Rs 125 crore. "We will have to refund money to people whom we have been issuing average bills on basis of the old tariff once the state government approves the revised tariff. This will reduce the recovery amount significantly. Any person who has installed a meter now can apply to us for refund if his bill is lower than the average bill. We will refund after taking three months' bill into consideration."

Totwani further said that a four member committee comprising himself, Kamlesh Dharne, Manda Lende and Ashok Katle would probe the NMC tanker scam.
