Aseem Gupta, as municipal commissioner of Nagpur from June 2008 to April 2010, was supposed to be a custodian of NMC’s administration.
However, going by his travelling record, he seems to have spent more time liaisoning for and representing NMC outside Nagpur. In response to a RTI query, NMC has revealed that Gupta undertook 84 trips by air during his 22-month tenure, amounting to nearly four trips a month or one every week. The trips were to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and even to Dubai for various reasons.
NMC spent Rs 10, 87,765 on tickets alone. NMC general administration department revealed this to secretary of Jan Samasya Sangharsh Niwaran Samiti NL Sawarkar. Gupta, who had landed in controversy for running up phone bill of Rs 1 lakh in a month, visited Mumbai 52 times for attending seminars, meetings in Mantralaya, and other programmes. He travelled to New Delhi 18 times to attend meetings conducted by urban development ministry for JNNURM.
