NAGPUR :-Boy claims mobile injury, docs say no

Nagpur police has rubbished claims that a 15-year-old boy sustained mysterious injuries on his left eye while fiddling with a cellphone.

The incident was one of the several rumours of strange rays from cellphones claiming the lives of users which have been doing the rounds in the city.

The expert cops from the cyber cell however claimed that the mobile phone which caused the injury may have had a technical snag, which caused the apparent injury.

The cops also invited opinions from doctors who treated the teenager before shooting down the theory that harmful rays emanating from mobile phones may have caused the injury to the victim's eye.

Panic had been triggered after a local youth from Giripeth was rushed to a private clinic after complaining of bleeding from the eyes while surfing the Internet on the cellphone at his residence.

Sub-inspector Sameer Gaikwad, incharge of cyber crime cell, said that there was no reason to panic in the first place. "We have checked the mobile phone and there was no apparent problem with the handset. The mobile phone was functionally properly when we tested it. We have collected the browsing history and other call details. We could not figure out why the cellphone was being held responsible," said Gaikwad.

The cyber cell had, in the meantime, conducted checks on cellphone numbers that were being forwarded in a warning message, saying that such numbers in red could trigger brain haemorrhage in the call receiver. "All the 'suspect' cell numbers are actually deactivated numbers," said Gaikwad.

Deputy commissioner of police Kailas Kanse told TOI that the doctor who attended to the teenager also did not refer to any unusualness in the eye injury.
