Students get jittery over NU reval results

Richa, a meritorious student, took admission in BBA course which comes under the aegis of the Nagpur University. However, all her dreams came crashing down when she was declared failed in logistics. She further received a shock after her mark-sheet displayed that she got zero in the subject.

The photocopies of the answer-sheet however tell a different story. She applied for revaluation where the result was again no change. Ultimately, she sank into depression and slipped into coma and had to be admitted in ICU.

This is not only the story of a particular girl but also of the thousands pursuing education from NU. Not only the poor valuation but also the long delay in declaration of revaluation results is giving sleepless nights to the students who applied for the revaluation.

Even as the winter exams began on October 3, the students who had applied for revaluation about two to four months back are yet to get their results. Many of them even appeared for the winter exam while others are all set to lose their academic year.

The officiating registrar and controller of examinations (CoE) Debendranath Mishra admitted that they were facing all sorts of problems regarding revaluation. "After the expiry of all the important bodies like management, academic councils and senate, the bodies which look after examination work like board of studies were also dissolved. It becomes difficult to get lecturers for valuation as they need to be appointed by these bodies," he said.

Richa`s parents moved the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court along with another girl pursuing law. The latter too was awarded zero marks. While checking the law student`s answer-sheet photocopy even the judges observed that the applicant deserved marks.

The NU authorities then checked Richa`s paper from an expert who declared her passed in the exam. "After our expert`s review, we cleared her," the CoE told TOI. The cases of both girls will again come up for hearing in a couple of days.

The students, especially those pursuing professional courses like engineering and MBA, are the worst hit due to delay in revaluation results. As per the norms, the results should be out within 45 days, but in NU it is going beyond two to four months. Though, the NU authorities defended the late declaration of revaluation results stating that it was a facility and not a right, the students are the worst sufferers.

"I was declared failed by just one mark. There is no provision of retotalling, I`ve to spend nearly Rs 1,000 for the revaluation process," Ankit who is pursuing a professional course, said. He added that for getting a photocopy done he had to pay Rs 300 and the wait endlessly. Then he had to pay charges for reassessment which is Rs 450. He had already paid Rs 480 for filling up of supplementary form.

"The revaluation is nothing but a sham and it has become a money-spinner for the NU," he said
