No parking on railway stn road

To ease traffic situation close to Nagpur railway station, traffic police has decided to mark the road from Jai Stambh square to Manas square as no-parking zone. In its affidavit submitted to Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, traffic police said that the only way to curb the chaos on the narrow one-way road is permanent ban on parking of vehicles on this stretch.

Confirming this, senior police inspector (traffic, south zone) Avinash More told TOI that various drives by the traffic police had failed to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on this road. He admitted that factors like encroachment by hawkers, autorickshaws and illegal plying of taxis were causing congestion on this road. The traffic problem gets worse when autorickshaws and vendors block the entry at railway station and illegal taxis on the road eat into the space meant for other vehicles coming to the station. It creates traffic congestion during the peak time, insecurity to the commuters leading to possibility of accident and inconvenience to all. Some passengers miss their train due to this situation.

Another major concern of traffic department is octroi post of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, said More. He said due to vehicles parked in front of the post, frequent traffic jams occurred there, "We have also submitted a proposal to NMC to either shift the octroi post or ensure that no vehicle is parked in front." This would help reduce traffic congestion.

The senior PI said that the vehicles of customers visiting the eating joints on the road would also not be allowed to park. The illegal construction of a durgah on the road will also be removed, he said. The traffic police had also approached the NMC to display no-parking boards on the entire stretch to help the effort, said the senior PI, adding if any motorist was found violating this rule they would be fined.
