Amravati Road left in a mess

How long does it take to cover up trenches and level a road once work has been completed, ask motorists travelling down Amravati Road. It surely can't take more than a month. However, travelling down the stretch of road outside LIT campus has become a pain due to the trenches dug up over a month ago.

Also, the new layers of asphalt laid on this road have not been levelled, making the stretch risky, especially for two-wheeler drivers. Dr Ramakrishnan, a nearby resident, said, "No amount of complaints help. The uneven roads outside LIT make commuting very difficult. Huge manholes are lying open and a disaster is waiting to happen at the bus stop outside LIT."

The back-breaking condition of the stretch of road outside LIT is only matched by the footpath along the LIT boundary wall, which is in a bad shape. Residents have been crying hoarse over the trenches for a long time but to no avail.

When TOI tried to find out which government body maintains this road, it met with a dead-end. Technically, Amravati Road is maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). But this particular stretch near Bharat Nagar is being maintained by the Public Works Department, informed an official. "The road beyond kilometre no. 9 falls under NHAI," he said. How and why this must affect the common man remains an unanswered question.

Another resident of Bharat Nagar, VK Jain, said, "This has been the case for several weeks now. As it is, the area is highly accident-prone. Such conditions make it even worse for motorists, especially at night. Even the asphalting work in the lanes inside Bharat Nagar is very poor. The potholed lanes have been left untouched, while work done on the others is uneven, making the situation even worse."

When asked if he ever noticed a board or sign on the stretch, clarifying the nature of work, he said, "We have no clue who dug up the road and why. All we know is that it is always the commuters who suffer."

"Aren't Bharat Nagar and LIT a part of Nagpur? Don't we pay our taxes? Whichever body dug up the road, the local corporator should at least ensure that the work is completed on time and proper measures are taken to avert any mishaps," said SV Falmali, a senior citizen residing in the area.

Corporator of the area, Malathy Bhagat, said that she could not hear the question this correspondent was asking, since she was attending a function.
