Jan. 26, is a national holiday in India for its Republic Day celebrations. This day commemorates the day in 1950 when the Indian Constitution first came into force, three years after Independence.
The celebrations for the event are marked by a grand military parade held in the heart of New Delhi from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace, to the Red Fort. The parade is attended by Indian leaders along with a chief guest who is a visiting head of state. This year the guest of honor at the celebrations is Indonesian President Susilo Bamgbang Yudhoyono.
Government offices, businesses and schools in India are closed.
