Makkrelwar had recently slipped out of police dragnet while being chased when cops spotted him and his two accomplices trying to run away with a stolen bike. Police could nab Satish Suryavanshi (20) and Nitesh Sahale (18) near Manas Chowk last week but the mastermind managed to evade arrest.
Police said Makkrelwar had several offences of thefts, housebreaking thefts and kidnapping against him in MP. He would lure youths with money and ask them to accompany him to Nagpur. Here he would lurk around Sitabuldi, Dhantoli, railway and bus stations looking for two wheelers to steal. "Makkrelwar is resisting cops during the interrogation. We feel he must have been involved in several cases of vehicle thefts," said a cop.
Makkrelwar has told cops that he had found the country-made weapon abandoned on the street. Police feel that may not be true. "It is possible he was planning a major crime," said a source.
Makkrelwar showed unique behaviour for a vehicle thief. He would not dispose of a stolen bike immediately but keep it at his place for a couple of months before looking out for a buyer, said a cop from Sitabuldi police station.
City cops had initially returned empty handed from his residence at Chhindwara. They tasted success after returning a couple of hours later. Makkrelwar had fled from his home seeing cops arriving at his doorstep but was later pinned down when he returned to pick up some cash.
