Rashtriya Lok Dal president and former union minister Ajit Singh on Sunday stated that the only reason demand for separate Vidarbha was losing steam was due to lack of strong leadership and political will.
"There is no doubt that Vidarbha has been a backward region. Despite having rich natural resources, the region has been always neglected. Other parts of the state particularly Western Maharashtra are prospering because of leaders of Vidarbha," he stated while talking to media during a fishermen's meet organized here Sunday.
Ajit Singh said, "like a strong agitation going on for separate Telangana state in which college students and even children are participating with total commitment, in Vidarbha people do not have seriousness and commitment on the issue.
In Telangana, even a small kid asks queries regarding the development over formation of Telangana state and what is going on at Centre over the issue. In the last six months, almost 150 youngsters laid down life for statehood of that region," he stated. "Here, people are in favour of Vidarbha statehood but they do not come out openly and put up the demand before authorities," he stated.
"I am in favour of smaller states like Telangana, Vidarbha and even Harit Pradesh. We will also start our agitation for reorganisation of UP. We had stopped it for some time as Telangana issue had come up," Singh said. The UPA government's manifesto in 2004 had promised a separate Telangana but that never happened, he added.
Singh came down heavily on the UPA government calling it responsible for increasing inflation and corruption. "If there was no corruption in 2G spectrum allocation, then why was the minister (A Raja) made to resign," he asked referring to new telecom minister Kapil Sibal's remarks rbbishing the CAG report on 2G spectrum allocation.
Singh also slammed the Centre for spiralling prices of essential commodities and said food had become so costly that people were not able to feed themselves. He blamed the wrong agricultural policies being pursued by the government.
RLD supremo Ajit Singh stated that earlier Members of Parliament (MPs) used to expose the scams and corruption cases by raising issues in Parliament. "Now, media are doing the job and MPs too prefer to go to media rather than raise the issue on the floor of house," he said.
