Close on the heels of the brutal murder of Nasik additional district collector Yashawant Sonawane by oil mafia, a DySP and three policemen were attacked by adulterers near Nagpur during raids on Tuesday.
The incident took place at Umred near Nagpur, where the cops were raiding a kerosene adulteration joint. A gang of assailants attacked the raiding party with axes and even pelted stones as soon as they reached the spot.
The DySP and three cops were injured in the attack and admitted to a municipal hospital in Umred. Soon the reinforcements arrived and the assailants ran for cover.
The raids were part of a state-wide drive by the authorities against oil mafia which is indulging in massive adulteration of kerosene as well as petrol/diesel.
The crackdown was launched after Sonawane was set on fire by the oil mafia when he tried to take photographs of kerosene theft from an oil tanker.
Eleven persons were arrested in connection with Sonawane’s murder. Incidently, the prime accused Popat Shinde too died of burns on Monday in a hospital here.
So far around 200 racketeers have been taken into custody across Maharashtra during raids to curb adulteration of not only oil but other essential commodities like milk and milk products.
The oil mafia spread over the state is said to be worth over several thousand crore of rupees.
Its tentacles run deep through the bureaucratic, political and security spectrum.
