One year on, hunt for a V-C continues for Rajasthan University of Health Services

The Rajasthan  University of Health Services is waiting for a regular vice-chancellor for nearly one year now. Following the retirement of the first vice-chancellor Dr PPS Mathur, ad hocism became the order, affecting the very health of the university.

Though the university had advertised and interviewed a number of candidates for the job nearly a year back, no full time vice-chancellor is being appointed. Currently, principal of Sardar Patel Medical College Bikaner, Ram Babu Panwar, is holding the additional charge of the university.

According to sources, Dr Ram Babu Panwar himself is a heart patient and he is not able to give the new university any direction and is simply biding his time. The present vice-chancellor, Dr Panwar, was also rejected by the selection panel. He was given the charge on November 28 last year.

Earlier, the Ashok Gehlot government had temporarily appointed noted neurologist and the then principal of SMS Medical College Dr Ashok Pangariya. However, after a short stint, Pangariya refused the offer of extension as he wanted to pursue his academic interest. But sources say the leading neurologist refused the job due to the prevailing lawlessness and poor academic atmosphere in the university.

The panel, meanwhile, selected Dr Ashok Kumar from the Life Sciences stream for the job. However, he was not favoured by the present minister resulting in the delay of a regular vice-chancellor.

Some sources pointed out that presently all the important posts in the university is occupied by people from a particular community and this communal angle is spoiling the university.

The university, in a very short span of five years, was mostly in the news for all the wrong reasons and not for any academic excellence. The latest was 23 medical students of RNT medical college caught copying in the exams.

Earlier, during the PMT exams conducted by the university, the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) had raided and found impersonation and cases are still going on.

"The University, which was established with the aim of making itself a leader in world medical education by focusing on the systemic instructions, teaching, training and research activities," now seems to be in a state of shambles.

The Rajasthan University Of Health Sciences came in to existence on February 25, 2005, with the aims to disseminate and advance knowledge in medical and health sciences. It started functioning from April 1, 2006. Initially six government and two private Medical Colleges have been brought under this university.
