If there's one place in the Tricity that's over-brimming with Cricket frenzy, it has to be Panjab University campus. Gearing up for the World Cup, the university has taken several measures to ensure that no cricket fan misses any moment of the sporting extravaganza.
So while seating capacity in all hostel television rooms has been increased to accommodate more students, even time limit of common rooms has been extended to allow late-night viewing of matches. And to ensure that students do not miss their meals if too engrossed in daily action, the mess and canteen timings too have been extended. If that was not enough, in a bid to provide better telecast of the games hostels have also updated their subscription of sports channel packages for uninterrupted viewing.
Jatinder Grover, warden of boys hostel number I said that expecting large gatherings in the common room, the seating capacity has already been increased to accommodate maximum number of students during the World Cup. Extra furniture has been removed from the common rooms and more chairs placed. Each common room is expected to accommodate over 150 students. ''On demands from students, we have also updated sports packs offered by service providers to ensure best telecast of the matches,'' Grover added.
Dean student welfare (DSW) Naval Kishore said television rooms would be open for all the World Cup matches according to the match schedules.
Ashwani Koul, warden of boys hostel number V said the duty hours of common room attendant have already been increased and a security guard would also be deputed outside the common room to avoid any untoward incident. ''Expecting huge rush during the match hours, we have decided to be extra cautious by deputing a security guard along with the common room attendant to maintain discipline,'' he added.
Officials said timings will also be relaxed for common rooms in girls hostels. There are 16 boys and girls hostel in PU, accommodating over 5,000 students.
