2 bone marrow transplantations at Nagpur
The bone marrow transplantation (BMT) of two cancer patients was today performed successfully at CIIHO hospital here for the first time in central India.Briefing mediapersons about the achievement, Dr Avinash Pofali said with this, Nagpur has achieved a milestone in the treatment of the blood cancer.

He said bone marrow is the spongy brown tissues inside the body cavity, where all blood cells are formed. Blood cancer arises from this bone marrow, he said.

At CIIHO, he said, bone marrow transplantation is performed simultaneously on patients suffering from multiple myeloma -- a cancer of blood cells.

The first BMT was performed on a 58-year-old on March 2 and second on a 70-year-old on March 3, he informed.

Dr Pofali pointed that the success of this procedure became evident on March 14, when white blood cells appeared in circulation of the patient. Now, both the patients are perfectly alright, he said.

Such transplantation is not a surgery type. It is a medical process wherein there is transplantation of blood cells. With this BMT, life span of the patient extends up to seven years and in some cases up to 10 years, he added.

While performing this procedure, Dr Pofali was assisted by Dr Surekha Pofali, Dr Shantanu Chaudhary and Dr Sapate.
