MLA Padole demands good water supply in his constituency

Angered by the rising number of complaints from residents against water shortage, Congress MLA Dinanath Padole from Nagpur (south) dropped his plans to travel to Mumbai for the assembly session and, instead, decided to march to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) office in Civil Lines on Monday to confront municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal.

He was, however, disappointed to learn that the commissioner was on leave. Padole, corporators from Nagpur (south) and their supporters then marched into additional municipal commissioner Vishnupad Bute's office to voice their anger.

Demanding equal distribution of water to all wards across all zones of NMC, Padole submitted a letter to Bute putting forth his demands. "Summer has just begun and people have already started suffering. Why do they make tall claims then of supplying water round-the-clock? Supplying water by tankers may be a solution but it should remain an alternative. Officials of water department themselves encourage residents to demand more tankers. This entire system smells of corruption," alleged Padole.

While giving NMC officials 15 days notice to correct the situation, Padole gave them strict instructions to supply water equally. "If the situation does not change within 15 days, I will be forced to revisit NMC," he said.

"When NMC officials assure sufficient water to last through summer, why then are wards in Nagpur south suffering tremendous water shortage while west has ample supply," he questioned. The officials must aim at improving the network at the earliest and ensuring sufficient water supply to fill the tanks instead of sending tankers, he demanded.

Corporator Ashok Katle from Jawahar Nagar said, "The tankers don't come to our areas even once a week. Residents are facing tremendous problems."
