The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has ambitious plans for the next academic year, ranging from the introduction of several new courses to creating new facilities.
"We have been receiving several requests from practising veterinarians on short-term courses that would help them in treating small and large animals brought to them. We will be introducing 10 need-based postgraduate diploma courses in addition to other degree programmes," vice-chancellor Dr R Prabakaran said on Thursday.
PG diploma courses would be offered in veterinary orthopaedics, veterinary ophthalmology, ethno veterinary practices, small animal internal medicine, small animal emergency and critical care management, small animal cardiology and small animal dermatology. An MVSc or MSc degree programme in biostatistics and MSc in bioinformatics are also in the offing, while six PG diploma and certificate courses at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal will be launched in the 2011-12 academic year.
The Livestock Research Station in Kattupakkam will be upgraded to a Postgraduate Research Institute of Animal Science while a freshwater fish hatchery for production of quality seed has been planned. A silver jubilee memorial building at a cost of Rs 115 lakh will be set up at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal, while buildings for Veterinary University Training and Research Centres in Krishnagiri, Salem and Tiruvannamalai and a girls hostel for B Tech (FPT) students will be set up.
The university has promised to release new varieties or strains of livestock and poultry and conduct base-level research on stem cell animal models for human diseases. It has signed memoranda of understanding with Auburn University, Arizona University and Virginia Tech University in the US to enhance quality of education and research among faculty in the fisheries department.
About 461 candidates will receive degrees and diplomas at the 14th convocation of the university on Friday.
