The backward region of Vidarbha certainly did not lag behind as far as taxman's chart for the last financial year is concerned. The area under Nagpur chief commissioner of income tax's stood fourth in terms of growth in tax collection as on March 31, 2011. Nagpur region collected Rs 2958 crore income tax as on March 31, 2011, growing by 27.2% compared to the same period last fiscal.
Contrast this with Mumbai, the commercial capital, that came in eighth with just 18.6% growth in collection. However, the amount it contributed was highest in absolute terms at Rs 1,47,947 crore. The higher collection from places like Nagpur may be indicative of incomes rising faster in smaller towns reflecting better distribution of economic benefits.
