3 lakh HSC students in city to get results today

On Thursday afternoon, Amir Sakarwala, 18, lingered longer at his tuition class to chat with classmates. “Being around other students made me feel less nervous,” said Sakarwala, whose Class 12 (HSC) results will be declared on Friday. At 1pm on Friday, around 13.3 lakh Class 12 students across the s
tate will find out their HSC results.  Of these, around 3 lakh students appeared for the HSC exams this year from the board’s Mumbai division.

Students will be able to access their results on the internet as well as through SMS (see box). Marksheets will be available in their respective junior colleges from June 6 till June 16.

“The exams seem to have gone well this year, the media did not criticise the board much,” said Ujwala Patil, chairperson of the board.

Apart from a glitch in the timetable, which listed the wrong date for the French, Urdu and Pali papers, no problems were reported at the exams this year. This is the first year that the board held an exam on English literature, a subject that junior colleges began to offer two years ago.

A ruling by the State Information Commission in 2009 stated that students would be allowed to access their corrected answer scripts, a matter that the board later took to the high court. The court stayed the decision and the matter is now pending. “Students will not be allowed access to their corrected answer sheets, that will stay the same this year,” said Patil.

This year, the number of students appearing for the board exams went up by 30,000 across the state. Of these, 22,000 more students appeared for the exams in the science stream and 12,000 more from the commerce stream, compared to 2010.

In a continuing downward trend, the number of HSC arts stream candidates has dropped by around 3,000.

For the Mumbai division, the number of students appearing for the HSC exams has increased by approximately 5,000, a less dramatic increase than the rest of the state. The HSC exams were conducted across 172 centres and 472 sub-centres in the Mumbai division. There were 2,057 centres across the state.
