AIEEE 2011 :- AIEEE fiasco: Lucky for some, unlucky for others

: Sugad Nanagawli arrived at Nagpur from Gondia on Saturday night for his AIEEE scheduled for Sunday. Being new to city, he boarded an autorickshaw for Centre Point School, his examination centre, early Sunday morning. At 8.40am, he reached the school, but seeing a deserted look he quickly realised that it was not the one he should have gone! He was at the Amravati Road branch while he had to go to Seminary Hills.

With his heart almost in his mouth, he shelled out an extra Rs 150 and pleaded with the auto driver to rush him to his destination. "I was so scared. I was convinced I had goofed up big time. I reached there exactly at 9am. They had just closed the gate, but I was allowed inside. I ran to the notice board to find my class number when I was informed that the examination had been postponed. I think it was meant to be my lucky day," said a beaming Sugad.

Madhav Oberoi runs a canteen at a prominent city school. On Saturday, a fire broke out in the kitchen and the fire brigade was rushed to put it out. Fortunately there were no casualties or injuries, but a financial loss nevertheless for Oberoi. On Sunday, the Oberoi family was busy in getting the kitchen repainted and started preparing food outside for AIEEE aspirants. What they did not expect was the huge rush of customers as soon as the exam postponement was announced. Family members also pitched in to make sure they could keep pace with demand. "Yesterday was not a good day at all, that is for sure. Today was much better for us". It was certainly a turnaround in luck for Oberoi in a short span of 24 hours.

But luck deserted some students twice within a couple of hours. Some students were denied entry at KDK College for reaching after 12 noon, which was the deadline to enter the examination halls. When these students came on time at 9am, they heard of change in timing. Later, when they returned after lunch, they were 15 minutes lateĆ¢€¦ and were thus denied entry. The students said they were told to report at 12.30pm but in the end their claims fell on deaf ears. The students lost a year.

Some private engineering colleges had deputed non-teaching staff to distribute pamphlets outside the exam centres. Rajesh Bansode (name changed), a clerk with a college on Katol Road, told TOI, "We have been standing here since 8am handing out handbills of our college to students. We don't get paid for this. We are promised compensatory offs which we never get. Now we will spend total 6-7 hours here because of the AIEEE delay".
