The results for the Std XII board exams conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

The results for the Std XII board exams conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have been declared with three students tied as the city toppers.

Two girls and a boy have scored 96.2%, all claiming the top spot in the city. Anupama Sharan (Centre Point School, Katol Road) scored 96.2% in the science stream, while Gayatri Dravid (Centre Point, Wardhaman Nagar) and Mohit Choudhary (Bhavan's, Civil Lines) scored the same marks in the commerce stream.

Though there was no official data available for Nagpur region from CBSE, according to unofficial figures, almost 95% students appearing for science stream passed the exams in the city. Commerce stream was even better with 98% students passing the exam in Nagpur.

Last year's top individual score in the city was 95.4%, which has been bettered this year in both streams.

There were many CBSE schools in Nagpur which did not have classes up to Std XII. Of the total students enrolled in CBSE Std XII class across the city, about 73% had opted for science while the remaining opted for commerce. No school in the city offered the Arts (Humanities) stream to the students at Std XII level for the 2010-11 academic session.

The schools where all three toppers studied achieved 100% results for all faculties.

For the science stream in Nagpur, the killer subjects was chemistry and mathematics as the majority of students found their grades dragged down by them. One prominent school, ranked in the top three in Nagpur, had just one failure and that too in chemistry.

For commerce stream in Nagpur, mathematics was the killer subject. Many students of the commerce stream struggled in the subject and that has affected their overall marks. English was next in line in dragging down students' performance.

There were quite a few students who have not cleared all their subjects, but got 'compartment' grade; which allows them another shot at clearing that subject in a special July exam. This helps the students as it does not waste their academic year and allows them to take provisional admission immediately in the first year of any undergraduate/diploma course. However, some schools in Nagpur included the 'compartment' grade students in their 'pass' list. Hence there is no exact data available on how many students will be appearing in the special July exam. However, the CBSE said that overall in the country, 10.67% students (of the total appeared) have been placed in the 'compartment grade'.

There are some schools which still believe that the students' performance could have been much better than this. "Question papers were tough this year overall, one or two subjects aside. Also these days, students are focused on entrance exams and focus more on coaching classes when they should be studying for their board exams. I believe this will be an eye opener for students," said Deven Dasture, director of Royal Gondwana school.

According to the figures released by the CBSE, across India (excluding Patna region), there has been an increase in the overall pass percentage by 1.84%. In 2010, the pass percentage was 79.87% while in 2011 it climbed to 81.71%. Girls did better than boys with a pass percentage of 86.93 as compared to 77.83 per cent for boys.

Chennai region, under which Nagpur city comes, has the highest pass percentage of 91.32 in the entire country. Of the total 675,658 that appeared for the exams across India 552,091 have passed.
