Cutting edge innovation, key to economic growth: VC

"Cutting edge innovation is the need of the hour and is key to economic growth," said Nagpur University vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal. He was addressing a large gathering of students, teachers and delegates at a symposium organized by GH Raisoni College of Engineering (GHRCE) on its premises at Hingna on Saturday.

Apart from Sapkal, state technical education director Subhash Mahajan, GHRCE director Preeti Bajaj, scientist of ministry of information and communication BR Murthy and others shared the dais.

Sapkal called to strengthen innovation and research in colleges with introduction of new teaching techniques. "Even though lakhs of engineers are produced each year, the research and development in India is lagging behind," he said.

He added that the since the number of students enrolled with NU was huge, they share a lot of responsibility but autonomous colleges had a lot of scope to achieve technical brilliance.

Raisoni group chairman Sunil Raisoni said, "We want advancement in the field of research and development so that engineering colleges become premier institutions."

Murthy, in his speech, pointed out that the average college student devotes a lot of time for social networking sites and other irrelevant things which hinders the overall level of inquisitiveness and enthusiasm among students. "Courses are available on the Net but students today lack the enthusiasm to learn or explore new innovations and development," Murthy said.

"Students are greatly influenced by social media. The mindset of students is the biggest challenge in order to achieve academic excellence. Also, physically challenged students and those from minorities do not have the same access to education as other students. This is a big hindrance to the country's economic growth," he added.

He concluded that to impart quality education to students, the faculty should be trained and students should be urged to think innovatively in terms of research. Other panelists deliberated on synergy between students and experienced faculty.

State minister for higher technical education Rajesh Tope and the chairman of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) SS Mantha were supposed to be present for opening ceremony but didn't turn up due to some reasons.
