NU unveils molecular bio, genetic engg dept

After a long gap, Nagpur University will unveil a new department in its campus in the form of molecular biology and genetic engineering department.

The department would start operating from the academic session commencing on July 1 and admit 30 candidates for Masters of Science (MSc) course in molecular biology and genetic engineering.

The admissions for the new course commenced from Monday; forms are available in NU's botany department.

"Since the new department doesn't have its own building yet, it will operate from our botany department," Board of College and University Department ( BCUD) director Arvind Chaudhary told TOI. He has been given charge of the new department till it takes complete shape.

This department offering in-demand courses was granted to NU by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in its Eleventh five-year plan last year, along with the required funds. However, bitter infighting and dirty politics within NU circles delayed its establishment by a year, sources said.

Chaudhary informed that any candidate pursuing graduation in life sciences would be eligible for admission to the course. "Graduates from wide variety of life science courses, including biology, biotechnology, microbiology, botany, zoology, fisheries and even from veterinary sciences and fisheries, can apply," he said.

He added that the UGC had granted a post of reader and three lecturers for the new department and the process of appointments was already underway. "For the time being, we've identified experts from various fields who will teach students on contributory basis. This includes persons from pharmaceutical sciences, botany, zoology, National Research Centre for Citrus (NRCC), Central Institute for Cotton Research ( CICR), and National Environment and Engineering Research Organisation (Neeri) among others," he said.

Chaudhary pointed out that the new department would have the distinction of being the first to implement Credit Based Choice System (CBCS). "the semester system will allow CBCS. The syllabus and other reading material are ready. Now, only admissions are left," he said.
