The state has finally allotted Institute of Forensic Science (IFSc) to the city and it will start operations from the 2011-12 academic session from the Institute of Science (erstwhile Govt Science College). Though the decision in this regard was made by the state cabinet on July 5, the Institute of Science forwarded the proposal for seeking an affiliation to the Nagpur University about a week back.
TOI on April 2, 2010 was the first to report about the government plans to open IFSc in Nagpur citing minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope. He had informed that similar courses started in Mumbai and Aurangabad universities evoked massive response from the students.
A senior NU official however added that it would be difficult for the college to get an affiliation for this year looking into past history where it took long time for any proposal to get a green signal. Moreover, red tapism and bureaucratic hurdles in NU would make the task even more difficult.
According to proposal submitted by the Institute of Science director, the IFSc would initially offer three courses BSc, PG diploma in forensic science and related laws, and PG diploma in digital, cyber forensic and related laws. The college has proposed intake capacity of 50 seats for the three-year bachelor course while 40 students each would be admitted in other two diploma courses having one year duration.
The new college would directly operate under state Higher and Technical Department which had already sanctioned 65 posts of lecturers. A budget of Rs 5.35 crore was also allocated for the IFSc Nagpur and the government had already constituted an ad hoc Board of Studies (BoS) for drafting the syllabus. However, it will be more or less similar to other two universities where it is underway.
Courses to be offered by Nagpur IFSc
* BSc Forensic Science
* PG Diploma in Forensic Science & Related Laws
* PG Diploma in digital, cyber forensic and related laws
