MNS performs truant' VC's aarti
The university students on Thursday garlanded vice chancellor SN Pathan's portrait and sang religious songs. But it wasn't exactly in
praise of the VC. The students, under the banner of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), did the exercise as part of a novel protest to highlight the fact that the university head was seldom present in his office.

The MNS activists organized a huge morcha on the university's premises that started from Variety square for highlighting VC's continuous absence from the office and lethargy of university officials towards plight of students.'

The huge morcha was stopped at Maharajbagh gate by the police who were present in large number to prevent any eventuality. A delegation led by MNS activist Mangesh Duke then met with Pathan who was earlier busy in a meeting on ragging held at Guru Nanak Bhavan on Amravati Road.

"Every time we come with our problems, we are told that the VC is out of town. For most of the times, he avoids meeting us and remains engaged in attending functions. We had no other way to apprise officials of our plight," Duke told TOI.

The delegation apprised the VC of a host of problems faced by the students. Pro-VC GS Parasher and registrar Subhash Belsare accompanied the VC. The students demanded improvement in quality of valuation of answer sheets as not even 10% of students managed to clear professional courses examinations like BCA and BCS.

They pointed out that many of the results were getting late beyond the limit of 45 days set as per the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994. In fact, the university had moved back to its old ways and results are getting delayed by as late as 90 days, they said.

The delegation highlighted the fact that students were suffering immensely due to absence of lecturers in their colleges. "Even the present set of lecturers are engaged in coaching classes and skip colleges. They force students to join their tuition," Duke claimed.

Major demands

* Action against colleges having no principals and lecturers

* Steps to improve results of professional courses like BCA, BCS as not even 10% students out of around 10,000 managed to clear the exams

* Valuation of answer sheets should be done from experts and those lecturers who are responsible for errors should be punished

* Declare results in 45 days as per rules mentioned in the Act

* Prevent lecturers from engaging in tuitions and take action against them

* Remove minority status of professional institutions as deserving Marathi students failed to get seats
