different places in city. The two former students of Bachelor of Business Administration course, hailing from good families, used duplicate keys to steal bikes despite the fact that family of one owned a car. Ambazari cops have recovered 10 stolen bikes after the duo confessed to their crimes.
The police said that their informer had hinted about a youth wanting to dispose of a motorcycle for just Rs 2,000. Intrigued by the offer, Ambazari police laid a trap for the youth. Niyaz Khan, 21, was caught red-handed trying to sell off a stolen bike. Upon being quizzed, he named Suman Yadav, also aged 21, as his accomplice. Yadav was rounded up by Ambazari police's detection squad under senior inspector ND Ingole and assistant police inspector GK Wasekar.
The youths, whose fathers are government employees, used to receive substantial sum each month from their family to continue their studies. In Nagpur since 2008, Khan and Yadav took admission in different colleges but stayed together at a rented place in Verma layout. Soon the youths discontinued the studies and began straying into criminal activities. Police said that they were involved in bike thefts since August 2008. "Though they stole bikes they are not hardcore criminals. They had begun taking drugs and stole to pay for the addiction. They failed to strike many deals with stolen bikes," said a cop involved in investigations.
Police said that family members rushed to Nagpur after being informed. "Their fathers fell sick after learning of what the sons were doing," said another cop. It is learnt that the youths' apparently stole the first bike from Mominpura where they went to eat. Khan and Yadav then stole three more bikes from Mominpura. Three bikes were stolen from Sitabuldi and Dharampeth localities. The youths also admitted committing bike thefts from Tilak Nagar and Gandhi Nagar under Ambazari police station.
Police squad comprising head constable Raju Manekar, Kishore Waghare, Ajay Neware, Anil Patil and Vijay Shrivas recovered four stolen bikes from the parking slots at the railway station where the bikes were kept while the youths looked for potential customers. It is learnt that the duo had taken three bikes to Korba in Chhattisgarh. Apart from 10 bikes, one more is also likely to be recovered soon. Police also questioned several others, including friends and a cousin of Khan, in connection to the bike thefts but are yet to make any further arrest.
