Last man standing at NU also goes

The Nagpur University is headed for further trouble. In fact, a big one. Controller of examination (CoE) Debendranath Mishra, who is also holding additional charge as registrar, has resigned after being selected as director of Marathwada University's sub-centre.

Though Mishra refused to comment, senior officials confirmed he would be relieved after October 15. "Nothing stops in this world without anyone," he indirectly indicated adding he would let the media know if he was going. He added it was his "personal" matter and "nothing will be affected" in NU.

Officiating vice-chancellor BV Gopala Reddy also refused to comment but said he had not accepted Mishra's resignation yet. "I really can't say anything at the moment," he asserted.

After Mishra, known as an efficient officer, two statutory posts รข€" CoE and registrar -- will fall vacant and remain so at least until next year. NU is already running without regular VC, pro-VC and terms of important bodies like management, academic councils and senate have ended. To add to the NU woes, even the post of director of Board of College and University Development ( BCUD) is vacant. All these posts are being looked after by other officials given additional charge. Though Reddy can hand over the charge of registrar and CoE to any of deputy registrars, the fact is that it will add to NU's burden and inefficiency.

The university has failed to fill up the posts since years citing roster which they claimed was not checked by the government. This has severely affected the work. The examination work has been hampered severely with many results getting delayed and winter exams that were supposed to begin in September deferred by a month. The revaluation has become a bane for both the university and the students as results are delayed by as much as three to four months. Many a time, revaluation results come out after winter exams.

Already, there is a huge pendency of files and ultimate sufferers are students. TOI on August 20 had reported how important works are stuck after the change of guard at NU and how temporary arrangements had led to a mess. The situation was bad even when VC SN Pathan and pro-VC GS Parasher were at the helm. After expiry of their terms on July 13 along with that of various bodies on August 31, the situation has worsened. With Mishra's resignation, the NU work may come to a stand still, academicians fear.
